Human Behaviour Club Partners with Irrational Labs
Why everyone in health and tech needs to understand and learn human behaviour
When I started the human behaviour community on Clubhouse my aim was to bring an understanding of how the brain works, how humans think and make decisions coupled with how we can influence behaviour. I have been intrigued about these areas ever since my year at business school studying behavioural economics and also in the past few days practicing lifestyle medicine and consulting tech start ups on product design after having beta tested many apps and wearables. As a doctor and tech guy I think everyone needs to understand Human Behaviour and this is even more important for those building Product Management skills.
As the Human Behaviour community grew to 750 k followers I have been fortunate to deepen my understanding by hosting numerous behavioural scientists, neuroscientists and psychologists including Nir Eyal and BJ Fogg. Most recently I hosted ex Cambridge analytics behavioural scientist Patrick Fagan for his book launch. I have also enrolled in the behavioural science bootcamp for Health specialisation with Irrational labs do further my knowledge and I must say it has been worth every penny and excellently taught. I would advise enrolling for every newsletter subscriber and it will be something you won’t regret as it will teach you how to make better decisions and influence behaviour.

Unveiling the Power of Behavioral Science in Health and Tech Design
Today, we're diving deep into the captivating world where health and technology intersect, shedding light on the significant role that behavioral science plays in shaping both fields. As we explore the fascinating connections between human behavior, health decisions, and tech innovations, you'll discover how these synergies are transforming the way we approach well-being and design.
The Science Behind Health Choices
Behavioral science delves into understanding how humans make decisions and respond to different stimuli. In the realm of health, this knowledge is invaluable. Research has shown that our choices are often influenced by factors beyond the simple equation of risk versus benefit. Emotions, social context, and even the order of information presented can sway our decisions.
By applying behavioral science principles, health professionals can design interventions that nudge individuals toward healthier choices. For instance, personalized nudges through text messages can encourage medication adherence, while framing exercise as a social activity can motivate people to be more active. Understanding how behavioral economics and psychology intertwine helps us create strategies that align with how our minds work.
Tech Design for Positive Habits
Now, let's talk about technology. In our digital age, innovative products and apps have transformed how we manage our health. But the success of these tools relies on how well they tap into our behaviors and motivations. This is where behavioral science enters the picture.
Behavioral science drives the design of tech products that encourage positive habits. Apps that employ gamification techniques, such as rewarding users for completing daily fitness goals, leverage our innate desire for achievement. Similarly, habit-tracking apps exploit the science of repetition and routine to help us establish healthier lifestyles.
The Marriage of Health and Technology
The marriage of behavioral science with health and technology is ushering in a new era of user-centered solutions. Imagine a world where health apps are designed not just for functionality, but also to resonate with users on a personal level. Or picture medical treatments that adapt to each patient's unique behaviors and preferences.
At the intersection of health and tech, there's a tremendous potential for improving patient outcomes, increasing engagement, and making wellness truly accessible. By leveraging insights from behavioral science, we can craft experiences that are not only effective but also empathetic to the diverse needs of individuals.
In a world that's constantly evolving, we believe that understanding the intricacies of human behavior is key to creating lasting change.
The key to designing a successful product is understanding what causes friction and what helps retention. This is also true for humans and our everyday behaviours as often we take the path of least resistance.
This is a really interesting paper that came out this week.
