Elon Musk announced his acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion and vowed to propel free speech on the platform. What does this mean for tech? What does this mean for social influence? What does this mean for the future of society?
Being in tech and working as a medical advisor at Havas (a communications company) this story is super relevant to me.
I held a Clubhouse room on the Human Behaviour Club to discuss the news and reactions to this story. We had over 8000 people come in and out of the room and had a lot of people share their reactions.
Some of the takeaways were-
Eric Weinstein- We lost our ability to convey criticism and now extremely brutal abuse is used. Snark is the product. A lot of people flock to social media to hurt people. A lot of what passes for entertainment these days is watching bad things happen to people we are semi aquatinted with. He then went on to compare it to people going to the coliseum to watch gladiators.
Other points-
Elon Musk is the greatest entrepreneur of our time and will be able to make twitter better, get rid of bots and help us enter Web 3.0.
Elon Musk’s promise to make algorithms transparent gives potential for academic researchers to prove that we should giving people what they want but what they ask for.
The bot problem needs to be solved as it can skew reality and Elon will help solve that.
There will be no drastic changes in twitter. This is all hype.
Future of Social Audio?
Social Audio has really taken off since the pandemic and the launch of Clubhouse. Since the app’s inception there have been many social audio copycats looking to replicate the early clubhouse success. It was reported that Twitter tried to buy Clubhouse for $4 billion before rolling out its twitter spaces clone. Twitter spaces has had good traction with the NFT community and various others and recently hit a social audio record with 170 k concurrent listeners last week when the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan hosted a space. This showed the tremendous power of social audio once again. We must remember it February last year it was Elon Musk jumping on clubhouse which led to a lot of media attention and left people scrambling to get on the platform. So now with Elon Musk having Twitter spaces at his disposal, it will be interesting where he takes it. I feel social audio leads us well into Web 3.0 and the metaverse almost like a bridge. The platform that will ultimately win will become decentralised, reward and listen to creators, ensure high quality content prospers and bring user informed features to the platform. I think this is a perfect time for companies to start using social audio to really engage more deeply with their audiences and by agreeing partnerships with audio creators early on it will enable them to get a head start.
